What’s up babes!
Some have been waiting for it, some have been dreading it but, it is surely being felt, that Tropical Winter season. Yes, we’ll call it that way because let’s be honest; this ain’t the “lets wear tights under my jeans weather” you face in Paris (Well, maybe they do in Curepipe!) Let me know in the comments section if it is that cold!
Correct me if I’m wrong, winter in Mauritius goes something like this:
One day you wake up and it’s “total freezing me arse weather” where you “sprint” undress to jump into the hot shower, which you then, don’t want to leave. Then some days, you wake up in the middle of the night sweating your life away because you thought it’s too cold to leave the A/C on, then on other days you regret wearing your ten-layer outfit to work. But before bed you need your cozy fluffy stockings! Basically, it’s hot then it’s cold, then it’s hot again! It’s like the weather was on PMS.
So there comes the most thought question of a fashionista “what do I wear today?”
Fortunately, for us island women we have a selection of summer pieces in our closet that we can add up to complete our daily tropical winter look.
But let me guide you through five essentials that will keep you warm while looking good, and hopefully match with the ever-changing temperatures.
Here are your basics:
1. Mom Jeans
Ripped or not, high waisted preferably is an “ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE” of the year.
They will be your best friend, if your boss is cool, you can wear them to work, on a date, you will still look damn fine (tested and approved).
They can be worn to run your errands and go shopping, plus, they are definitely easier to remove than skinny jeans thus, will save you time in the changing room.
2. Oversized Blazer
Yes, please the bigger the better!
But be careful to not disappear under it. This would be that friend that you don’t always call but is always there for you.
Fashionistas are calling for the colorful Blazers this season but hey if you don’t feel like wearing pink, that’s also fine you can go for a nice camel color or our traditional very famous black color. Black is always a good idea!Maybe you’re doubting it, maybe it’s hard to find! Don’t hesitate to sneak into the bf’s closet and try on that jacket he had custom made for his sister’s wedding that Covid cancelled! (rolling my eyes hard here)
Now, try it with shorts: you can keep the top or not or even add a cute bralette, still looking fab right? There you go, ONE piece, MANY options.
3. Knitted tops
With long sleeves, V-neck optional white, beige, black.
Basic of the basics’ family, you already have it, I’m sure. So, when you feel that the blazer you pulled today is a bit too warm, you will still look appropriate beneath. Also new in town is the padded shoulder sleeveless turtleneck top, it will add a classy touch to your outfit!
4. Turtleneck Sweater Dress
The color really depends on your personality, but I would go for a grey or beige one. Depending on your mood, you can pick a tight one to show that booty or loose. Add on a waist belt, this will accentuate your hips and body shape.
Now, this basic piece can be worn in so many ways, going to Vurepipe throw the oversized blazer on it, going to a “50 people only” party feeling like a VIP why not add a pair of “over the knee” boots, but first make sure it’s really cold there, we want to stand out not be left outside lol.
5. Flared Pants
Babe, like I said let’s not forget we are in Mauritius!
Some days the sun will shine so bright, you will want to jump into your kinis, nice floral flared pants or with nice pastel prints will lighten up your outfit and still give you the island life feel. If it comes with the matching blazer or crop top, take my money already!
Ok, I know I said 5 but here’s a bonus one:
6. Hoodie and sweat pants set!
I know, I know! Not exactly being classy here, but wait, just imagine: a cropped hoodie top, high waisted matching sweatpants, and pristine white Nike Air force shoes. Then, accessorize it with your “never full” or your “substitute”/ your “bum bag” or “crossbody mini bag”. Wait, don’t leave the house yet! Remember that oversized camel blazer put it on. Also, new in town, a more classy version of the hoodie, with knitted material and kinda flowy, super cozy and comfy.
Alright babes, I hope this little guide will inspire you on trying new looks this winter. And little hint these essentials are actually available on the website.
